Armenia, The caucus country that spread LoveWaves in 2016 has already began the search for their search for their next Eurovision entry. Having released the first five songs of Depi Evratesil, they have continued to release the next five hopefuls entries into the national final. This includes alum from The X-Factor from both Armenia and Ukraine and even a winner of the Ukrainian version! Plus one of Armenia’s best known drag-queens, Kamil.
One of the acts competing is X-Factor Armenia 2017, alums, rock group, AlternatiV. The band were fairly successful in the early stages of the show, but unfortunately bowed out in 10th position.
AlternatiV have brought the song “Stare at Me” which is a soft rock edging on country pop song, this song has a feeling that it fits many genres but it ends up making the listener with mixed emotions, depending on staging and running order one does have to feel that AlternatiV may be in a little trouble, but we do know they are undoubtedly amazing live so if they bring it in the lives they may slip through as a borderline. But with the quality that’s coming from Armenia they will have to REALLY bring it!
Competing with AlternatiV is another X-Factor Armenia star, Angel Barseghyan competed with AlternatiV although she didn’t make it as far as AlternatiV, only making it to the ‘Four chair challenge’ where she was eventually eliminated. Angel has brought the very alternative song of “Heartbeat” this song gives us Loreen circa ‘Ride” era her enunciation is not always clear throughout the track, and seeing how Loreen’s comeback went last year with a similar styled song, one does have to worry for Angel. The song lacks a climax, whatsoever. Angel will have to really pull it out of the bag to win it in Yerevan.
Bound to be one of the most memorable performances in the national selection season Kamil Show, one of Armenia’s most well-known drag queens is singing “Puerto Rico” the ‘Armenian Despacito’ although Kamil may not linguistically known Spanish, she can think in Spanish! Her track begins in a very intense and mysterious introduction lead by Kamil’s lyrics which harmonize somewhat with Lilit Hovhannisyan vocals who also features on the track. The song then progresses into a dance club EDM banger! Although when you get into the second verse of the song, you do beging to feel the novelty has worn off…. We no doubt believe that Kamil will bring it at the lives and will slay the pack with a fun, colourful and slightly bonkers performance! One to look out for!
The next X Factor veteran again hails from the Armenian version and is the most successful of the three in the competition, Tyom placed fifth overall in 2017 edition of X-Factor Armenia. Tyom’s song, “Follow The Ocean” opens with a dramatic and like Kamil’s opening piano driven track. The track progresses to a unusual house beat, it is here you begin to notice the enunciation issues with Tyom’s track. The song itself is not terrible but it seems to be missing something. Although if Tyom does win he could hire the assistance of Moldavian saxophonist ‘Epic Sax Guy’ to perform the sax breakdown towards the end! Overall not a bad song but something is missing for it to be called a ‘good song’.
The last act to be revealed is X-Factor Ukraine 2016 winner, Sevak Khanagyan. Winning the foreign version of the series launched his career in his homeland. Sevak sings a interestingly modern Armenian language ballad “Quami”. Sevak understands drama, in his voice, instrumentation, and overall track, drama oozes! From this five revealed Sevak definitely stands out as the one certain to make an impact! His track is modern and powerful and the Armenian language suits the song so well. Overall we would love to see this song win and see Sveak sing for Armenia in Lisbon!
Armenia was represented by Artsvik in Kiev last year with the song “Fly with Me” she participated in the first semi final qualifying seventh before reaching 18 in the Grand Final.
