We again venture back to Valletta, Malta to interview another one of the MESC acts, and today we turn our attention to the duo of Dwett who are going to sing "Breaking Point" to hopefully win the ticket to Lisbon!
Dwett is a duo comprised of Cherylis and Mikhail.
Dwett, we are loving your song Breaking Point, can you tell our readers what the message of your song is?
“Breaking Point” written by Elton Zarb and Matt ‘Muxu’ Mercieca is a well-versed ballad, which speaks about the highs and lows of any relationship, a reflection of reality and truth. There are times in which everyone will reach that specific point where everything is put in doubt, but when everything is carefully thought of, the answer will be quite clear. This song is everything for us, because it is our first original song in English!
Why do you two want to go to Eurovision?
Let’s not joke around, shall we? We have always been first in front of the television to watch the Eurovision Song Contest surrounded by friends and family. To be a part of such a celebration would be a dream come true, awesome in every way. It is an incredible platform for any artist!
Do you guys believe you can win MESC?
I don’t think that we would have put “Breaking Point” forward in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest if we did not believe in it! There’s a lot of raw emotion and we hope to transcend that to the audience so that they feel the same way we do when we perform it.
What are your favourite Eurovision entries of all time?
Cherylis: If I had to choose, it would be ‘Only Teardrops’ by Emmelie de Forest!
Mikhail: Well, that’s straightforward. I’d pick ‘Molitva’ by Marija Serifovic. It was out of this world.
Do you two believe you can win ESC?
We believe that we have what it takes to succeed both in Malta, and abroad. There are various factors which need to be considered in both instances though. We believe in our song!
Do you have any pre show superstitions you do before you perform?
Superstition is something that we don’t particularly believe in. Judging by what we have done in previous competitions, we would want to be alone for a few minutes before going out on stage, just to get in the mood, and then off we go!
Who do you believe is your biggest competition in MESC?
Once you get to this stage, you take the whole festival as an experience. We don’t believe in the concept of a competition, we prefer to think of it as a showcase between 16 different songs, 16 different participants.
What is your favourite lyric from your song?
“I love you. I hate you. I need you”

Can you reveal any secrets about your staging or song anything special planned?
Well, there’s not much to say except what we have said time, and time again. We believe in a less is more approach when it comes to presenting ‘Breaking Point’. Our main goal is to get the audience to understand the meaning of the song, and get them involved.
If you weren’t a singer what do you think you would be doing?
Cherylis: Teaching! It is a profession I have always been interested in, because working with children and supporting them in their holistic approach to life has always been a goal of mine.
Mikhail: I am interested in learning about business, and the way everything works. One day, I hope to have my own business, something related to insurance. My forte has always been marketing so I would definitely handle that area with care and precision.
Which country do you think will win the ESC this year?
This is a trick question! There are always a couple of countries who put on a fantastic selection process, and as a result have a very good chance to doing well in the Eurovision Song Contest but to guess the winner before the songs are chosen is a no-go area. Let’s wait for all the entries, and then we will re-visit the question.
If you could duet with any famous singers, dead or alive who would it be?
We’re already a duet, so let’s just say that if we were to sing with anyone as a duo, we would go for either Beyonce or else Ed Sheeran. Well, why not have them both, and make a group performance out of it?!
If you win ESC what would be the first thing you will do?
HaHa! I think we would not manage to get on stage to do the reprise and if we do manage to get that far, we might not be able to sing it, as the first reaction would easily be shouting and screaming.
