Depi Evratesil gas released the second last bunch of hopefuls vying for the spot of the Armenian representative for the Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon. Having revealed the first 10 contestants for their revamped national final. Is there any competition for Tamar, Kamil and Sevak or are those three going to have a cakewalk to the final?!
I review the next five contestants hoping to snatch the ticket to Portugal via Yerevan airport!
Gevorg Harutynyan – “Stand Up” Readers may recognise Gevorg from the last edition of Depi Evratesil, where he joined one half of the 2009 Eurovision duo Inga & Anush, Inga’s team where he was unfortunately knocked out in the ‘One of Two” losing to third place getter Syuzanna Melqonyan. Gevorg is also an experienced competition singer having placed fifth in the 2013 edition of The X-Factor Armenia. Gevorg sings “Stand Up” which sounds like something out of an Armenian cinematic drama. The song melds symphonic strings and atmospheric traditional Aremian instruments to create a beautiful instrumental track the only thing that lets this track down is Gevorg’s vocals at times they feel messy making the track feel messy as well, whijhc is disappointing seeing the potential from the instrumental, this COULD have been a great dramatic track, but sadly it falls short.
Asmik Shiroyan – “You & I” Another Depi Evratesil veteran, Asmik again like Gevorg made it to the “Two of One” stage on Iveta Mukuchyan’s team. But this year she’s back and she’s got unfinished business, as she comes with a strong international team, behind the hits of “Say You Won’t Let Go” and “Stole The Show”. Which shows she hasn’t come to play this year she is gunning for the win, watch out Tamar, Kamil and Sevak!
“You & I” has one of the most interesting and immediate introductions. The song immediately has similarities to Sigala & Ella Eyre’s “Came Here For Love” The song progresses to an amazing chorus! The next verse continues the beat from the chorus only for the next chorus to take it up another level! While listening to this song we can only imagine the staging potential.
Showing her artistry Asmik breaks it down before the final chorus, this is sure to get the live crowd pumping! Asmik has brought the goods this year! She is now the one to beat in my book
Arman Mesropyan – “What You Hide” Arman has participated in a few various singing competitions but has never made any real impact. But will Depi Evratesil be his breakthrough? Unfortunately we think not “What You Hide” feels like a more powerful version of “On My Way” from Slovenia last year, but with that said I doubt this will make an impact and I don’t think that the favourites should be worried about this entry. As it progress it slightly becomes less powerful that “On My way” as it lacks a climax and any real power towards the end! All in all it would be a shame if Armenia did decide to send this over the other quality entries in this selection!
Zhanna Davtyan – “Unbreakable” Zhanna is an alum of X-Factor Armenia 2014, again keeping the Eurovision connections she was mentored by Armenia’s unlucky 2011 representative Emmy. Zhanna eventually placed 4th. Afterwhich she dropped off the Armenian music scene.
“Unbreakable” is a current and modern pop track sung by a competent singer, the song overall is nice and a good entry. But that’s it, the song is neither terrible nor good. This song is a very middle of the table song. It’s a non-offensive pop song, which could very well work in her favour, some people may just want a dance track to bop along to! A contender if everything works in Zhanna’s favour.
Mger Armenia – “Forever” Mger is one of Armenia’s most celebrated male artists winning “Male singer of the year” at the AMA’s (Armenian Music Awards) and being honoured by Armenian president Serzh Sargsyan by being bestowed “Honoured Artist of Armenia” . But Mger is also one of the most dramatic contestants released so far. Throwing shade at artist Tamar and Sevak, and saying that he had no competition in this national final. Bu we have to say Mger your song is by far one of our least favourite songs released, he attempts to cross traditional and musical theatre and it comes off as a cheap attempt and we’re afraid he may flop when he comes to the lives. Sorry Mger.
Overall Asmik has joined the ranks of Tamar, Sevak and Kamil in our leaders to win Depi Evratesil!
Armenia was represented by Artsvik in Kyiv last year with the song “Fly With Me” shae participated in the first semi-final qualifying seventh before reaching 18th place in the Grand Final!
